Lucknow: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to Maharashtriyan writer and social reformer Jyoti Rao Phule (Mahatma Phule) on his 190th anniversary.
The PM tweeted that inspired by Mahatma Phule's ideas India shoul collectively work towards building a nation where the role of education is pivotal.

About Mahatma Phule:
- Born on April 11, 1827, Jyotirao Govindrao Phule was an Indian activist, social reformer and a Maharashtrian writer.
- His work extended to the fields of untouchability and caste system.
- In September 1873, Phule and his followers formed a society named Satyashodhak Samaj (Society of seekers of truth) to attain equal rights for peasants and people from lower cast.
- Phule was an important figure of the social reform movement in Maharashtra.
- He died on November 28, 1890.
