The decision of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar to leave the opposition alliance and join hands with the BJP was not a sudden one.

Kumar resigned from the post of CM and took oath as Chief Minister for the 9th time at 5 pm on the same evening with the support of BJP. BJP state president Samrat Chaudhary and opposition leader Vijay Sinha have been made deputy CMs.

According to sources, Nitish Kumar had made up his mind to break the Mahagathbandhan and join the NDA on January 13 itself. On this day, a virtual meeting of the alliance of opposition parties i.e. INDIA Alliance was held. In the meeting, Rahul Gandhi said something which angered Nitish Kumar. Nitish Kumar felt so bad about Rahul Gandhi's words that he got up and left 10 minutes before the end of the meeting.

According to sources, on January 13, Congress had organized a virtual meeting of INDIA Alliance. The name of the co-ordinator for INDIA Alliance was to be finalized in the meeting. But Rahul Gandhi said that he will consult TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee for the name of the co-ordinator. Nitish Kumar did not like this thing. After some time in the meeting, the members took the name of Nitish Kumar as the co-ordinator. However, an angry Kumar rejected this post. He said that Lalu Prasad Yadav can be made the co-ordinator.

At the same time, a consensus has been reached on the name of Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge for the post of Chairman of INDIA Alliance. Kharge's name was proposed for the chairmanship by Mamata Banerjee in the fourth meeting. Arvind Kejriwal had agreed to this. Sources said that this was the second major disappointment for Kumar, as he was expecting his name to be proposed for the post.

Nitish Kumar had resigned at 11 am on Sunday itself. With his resignation, he had staked claim to form a new government in alliance with BJP. Sources have said that BJP and Nitish Kumar will stick to the 2020 formula for sharing cabinet berths in Bihar. After swearing in, CM Nitish said that the cabinet expansion will happen soon.
