Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be launching the ground breaking ceremony of the Sant Ravidas Memorial Shrine in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh as the BJP seeks to woo the electorally influential Dalit community ahead of the forthcoming assembly polls in the state due in November/December this year.

Sagar lies in the Bundelkhand region of MP where the Dalit community plays a crucial role in deciding the outcome of the elections.

Sources in the BJP said that the ground breaking ceremony of iconic Dalit saint, who was revered by the Dalits across the country, had been organised keeping in mind the electoral significance of the Dalit voters.
Sources said that Modi would seek to showcase the various schemes launched by the centre and the BJP-ruled state government in the state for the benefit of the Dalit community.

‘’There are 26 assembly seats in the Bundelkhand region in MP…..Sagar is considered to be the heart of Bundelkhand region…..there are a large number of Dalit voters in the district,’’ said a senior MP BJP leader.

A close look at the electoral performances of the two main rivals-BJP and Congress-in the region reveals that the party, which secured the higher number of seats in the region, went on to form the government in the state.

In three consecutive assembly polls in 2003, 2008, and 2013, the BJP swept the region bagging 30, 26, and 28 of the total 35 seats in the region and forming government in the state. Congress was decimated in these assembly polls in the region.

The Congress, however, made a comeback in 2018 and split the seats in the region. It bagged 17 seats while the BJP won 18 seats. And in a 2018 poll, Congress managed to secure a thin majority in the state after 15 years and went on to form the government. It was short-lived as the Congress government fell after senior party leader Jyotiraditya Scindia rebelled and joined with 21 MLAs.
