Aizawl: The polling was began in Mizoram today at 0700 hours amid tight security to elect a new Assembly. Mizoram had witnessed 67 percent voter turnout till 1500 hours.

The Congress was getting a tough competition from the Mizo National Front (MNF), headed by former Chief Minister Zoramthanga, for its third successive term.

The main two parties in the contesting in Mizoram were Congress and the Mizo National Front though the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was also striving hard to make its presence felt.

It is to be mentioned that Congress has been ruling the northeast state since it was formed in 1987 and BJP never got to win a seat from the 40- member assembly.

The Congress had fielded 40 candidates while the BJP and MNF were contesting in 39 and 40 constituencies, respectively.

Here are the LIVE updates:

-Around 67% voter turnout was in the state till 3 pm, as per Mizoram's Chief Electoral Officer.

-Till 1500 hours 58% voter turnout was recorded in Mizoram.

-Mizoram has recorded a voter turnout of 50% till 1300.

-The Election Commission has set up 15 special polling stations at Kanhmun, a village along the Mizoram-Tripura border, to facilitate voting by Reang tribal refugees, sheltered in Tripura for the past 21 years.

-11,232 tribal immigrants out of 35,000 are eligible to cast their votes in this election.

-"In view of the Assembly polls, the BSF (Border Security Force) and Assam Rifles troopers have been asked to further tighten the security along Mizoram's borders with Bangladesh and Myanmar to prevent any kind of cross-border movements by inimical elements," said Mizoram's Joint Chief Electoral Officer Zorammuana.

-Total voter turnout till 1100 hours was recorded around 29%.

-A heavy voter turnout was witnessed at Bru and Chakma dominated areas.

-Special polling arrangements have been made across the state to safeguard the interest of the Bru community.

-Food and transport facilities are also being provided to those coming to cast votes.

-"I request people of Mizoram to come out in large numbers to participate in #MizoramElections and caste your vote for continued stability and prosperity of the state," tweeted Congress leader, Sachin Pilot.

-In three Maoist-hit constituencies- Baihar, Lanji and Paraswada- the polling will end at 1500 hours, while it would continue till 1700 hours in other constituencies.

-Out of 209 candidates, 9 candidates have criminal cases registered against them.

-Till 9am total voter turnout was recorded around 15%.

-"As voting in Mizoram begins, I appeal all my sisters and brothers of state to turnout in record numbers and vote. Your one vote will lay the foundation of a prosperous and corruption free Mizoram," tweeted BJP leader Amit Shah.

-"I request my sisters and brothers of Mizoram, particularly the dynamic youth of the state, to turnout in large numbers and vote," he tweeted.

-PM Modi appeals Mizoram voters to turnout in large numbers.

-The counting of votes will take place on December 11.

-In all 7,68,181 voters with 393,685 women are to decide the fate of 209 candidates in Mizoram.
