Key Factor

Baghel and Congress party leaders have continuously maintained that the BJP has been using central investigating agencies to destabilise the Congress governments in poll-bound states of Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, with Baghel even commenting that the real challenger from BJP against the Congress in the upcoming election is ED.

Between January and October this year, the ED released 11 press releases of actions across Chhattisgarh. Among the accused named in the press statements were Saumya Chaurasia, a Chhattisgarh state civil service officer who was ex-assistant to CM Baghel, and Anwar Dhebar, brother of Raipur mayor Aijaz Dhebar. It also attached properties of Congress leader Devendra Yadav, Ramgopal Verma and others. Yadav, the youngest MLA from the Bhilai city seat, is contesting again from the same seat and is known to be a Baghel loyalist. The ED, in its dozen press releases just this year – (in 2022, the ED released only 2 press notes from Chhattisgarh) – went from ascribing the actions to “higher powers” to hinting at political involvement. In the Mahadev app money laundering case, the central investigating agency raided the house of former journalist Vinod Verma, political advisor and close aide of CM Baghel.

There is another important issue, fair price for paddy cultivators, strengthening rural economy, rampant corruption, unemployment and matters pertaining to tribal including protection of jal, jungle and jameen are the prominent issues carry higher probability to be flare up during the campaign for the upcoming elections in Chhattisgarh scheduled to be held in November.

Having a month falling closer to assembly elections in Chhattisgarh, the two prominent parties in state are set to escalate their election campaigns on a war-footing note for the 90-assembly constituencies that go to two-phased polls on November 7 and 17.

With nearly 38 lakhs farmers in Chhatisgarh, the issue related to agriculture and paddy plays a crucial role to ascertain the fate of political parties in state, particularly when congress has waived off farmers’ loan soon after coming to power in 2018, as promised and increased the minimum support price of paddy from 2100 to Rs. 2500.
