Chennai: Chennai-based transgender, Apsara Reddy on Wednesday, was appointed as the new general secretary of Congress Party.

Party President Rahul Gandhi welcomed the journalist and the activist Apsara in his party and gave her the post of the National General Secretary of the party.

She has become the first transgender to take the responsibility of general secretary of Congress Chennai unit.

She gave her speech in the presence of the party head, Rahul gandhi that Congress was the first party to developed India and gave India the best policies.

All India Women Congress Committee Principal, Shusmita Dev said it is a matter of pride that Apsara Reddy will be the first officer of Transgender Community.

-Apsara has worked in BJP and was also associated with AIADMK.

On joining congress she shared her experience while working in BJP, she said that the BJP government was very protective towards them.

She also said that they do not need charity, but want to overcome the inequality persistence in the society against transgenders.

About her life:

-Apsara is an academic person and has completed her studies in the field of journalism from Monash university and also holds an MA degree in Broadcasting, with a special focus on Developmental Economics, from the London University.

-She has worked as the President of Overseas Students Service at Monash University.

-Talking about her professional experiences, she has worked with BBC World Service, The Hindu, Commonwealth Secretariat in London, New Indian Express and Deccan Chronicle. She has written columns on several topics including consumerism, politics, celebrity lifestyles and education.

-She has also interviewed Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Ex-PM Australia, John Howard, F1 racer, Michael Schumacher, AR Rahman, and Hollywood star, Nicolas Cage.

In 2013, she also hosted a Tamil show 'Natpudan Apsara'.
