BJP's Upper caste reservation Bill in Parliament; 'A historic day', says Modi

New Delhi: Prior to Lok Sabha elections, the Narendra Modi government, on Monday has approved 10% reservation to be given to "economically weaker" sections of upper castes in government jobs and education sector.

This constitutional amendment bill is hailed by several BJP leaders describing it a "historic move', the bill is tabled for discussion today, in Parliament.

The Bill is said to be in sync with Modi government's motto "Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas" (with all, development for all).

This bill in true sense would be required as the as the Constitution does not provide for reservation on the ground of economic conditions. It envisages amendment to the the Articles 5 and 6.

However, the Congress described the government's decision as an "election gimmick" to fool the people and a proof of BJP's "fear" of losing Lok Sabha polls 2019.

The bill may cover people with annual income below Rs 8 lakhs, not owning more than five acres of agricultural land, not own a flat of 1000 sq ft or more, land of 100 yards in notified municipality area and 200 yards in non-notified area, to get the perks of this proposed general quota.

After the cabinet meeting, the constitution amendment bill will be introduced today, in the Parliament. This decision of Modi is being considered as a masterstroke before the election.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has issued whip for all its MPs to be present in the House, whereas Congress already ensured its MPs to attend the Lower House on Monday and Tuesday.

Whereas, the BJP hasn't seen any resistance from the opposition (considering the electoral impact of the bill), yet it's motive behind this move is under question. In such a scenario, the last day of the winter session can be a ruckus.

The opposition claims that the central government lacks both the time and the number in Parliament to get this bill pass, hence the purpose of bringing it in Parliament is only political.

However, the BJP government holds a majority in Lok Sabha but doesn't have enough number of members to back the bill, thus to get this bill pass BJP needs 2/3rd majority in the house.
