Uncommon Dharna for a common cause in NaMo constituency

Varanasi: Dharna is not uncommon. Nor is sitting of a woman on it. However, it is generally held in protest against a government action or inaction by the opposition. Sit-in by a woman in protest against her husband is unusual. This is an uncommon sight, but this is what is being precisely seen here for last two days, attracting curious crowds.

For the two-and-a- half-year-old child sitting on her lap all this is amusing. He is clueless.. He does not know anything. He understands even less. The woman gave her name as Ruchi.

Married five years ago she is homeless and helpless. Her appeals to every one concerned including police in the past have gone in vain. She, therefore., has pinned all hopes now on Prime Minister Narendra Modi who represents this town constituency.

A message written on a piece of white paper pasted on the wall behind her says it all. Reads the message in Hindi: Modi jee Nyay Dilayiye, Meri Jaan Ko Khatara Hai, Jaan Bachayiye (Mr Modi, help me get justice, my life is in danger, save my life).

Married into a family earning well her husband is a habitual drinker, a fact which was not disclosed to her before marriage. He has been thrashing her for complaints made against it. Bruises on her body tells everything.

Normally a woman helps another woman. She cries with her in distress. But her case is different. Her mother-in-law has sided with his son and thrown her out. No where else to go she is sitting outside her house hoping that she will receive justice sooner or later.
