Gandhis did not pay much attention to their family borough
Rae Bareli: This constituency in Uttar Pradesh which has been electing a Gandhi family member to the Lok Sabha for decades has one regret this time. It was virtually neglected by senior family members during the assembly election this year.
It was one of othe 53 assembly constituencies which went to polls on Thursday, The campaigning ended two days ago but Sonia Gandhi, head of the Congress party who was elected from this constituency in the previous Lok Sabha poll, did not come even once to address the voters.
One the eve of polling on Wednesday she only made an appeal to them to back the party in this and other assembly constituencies. Health issue might have prevented her from campaigning in these elections.
Her daughter, Priyanka, was not totally absent but she campaigned in the constituency only for a day along with her brother , Rahul.
It was far from what the party had give to understand. It was circulated by partymen before the election that she would vigorously campaign for the party along with Samajwadi Party MP and wife of chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. In reality, she came to the state when the election was halfway through.
Such reports had gained currency in the light of general belief that it was because of Priyanka that an alliance between the Congress and the SP was formed on the eve of elections. It now appears that it was a publicity stunt.
Rahul has aggressively campaigned in this year's elections in this state but only as a pillion rider. The limelight has been hogged by Akhilesh who is driving the cycle and who is a major player his party being the ruler.
The next election ( fifth of seven phases) will be held on Monday next.
