New Delhi: In a good news for its passengers, the Indian Railways is planning to introduce theft insurance where travellers can receive a cover for all their baggage and valuables.

According to official sources, the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is currently seeking the views of insurance companies on the scheme which would cover mishaps like heist and dacoity.

It may be recalled that the Indian Railways recently rolled out insurance facility for passengers booking online tickets. The existing system, however, does not offer any provision for compensation in case of thievery.

“We have been asked by the IRCTC to look into the possibilities of theft insurance. Moreover, their idea is to cover everything being carried by a passenger,” said a Mumbai-based insurer’s senior executive.
