Mulayam Singh Yadav sends the party to no-man's land

Lucknow: The declaration by the Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav that neither will he hand over the party nor its symbol to any one else including chief minister son Akhilesh Yadav has sent the ball to Election Commission's court. Neither can his rival camp nor any one else can settle the party feud now.

Parleys during the last two days between the warring groups in the party and others had created hope of a truce. But this assertion made on Wednesday at a press conference has totally belied it. With the two factions not ready to budge an inch the the party is heading for a formal split.

Leaders of the two camps have already met the Commission officials and held initials talks. They have also submitted documents to prove their claims but the Commission is yet to take a final call. The only option left for the Commission to move out of the tussle in this light was a compromise by the two and withdrawal of claims. The door seems to have been closed.

The electoral body has already fixed January 13 for further hearing of the case. It may freeze the present cycle symbol of the party and allot different symbols to them, pending final judgement.

If Mulayam is to be believed, Ram Gopal Yadav, a close confidante of Akhilesh, has already selected motorcycle symbol for his faction to be named Akhil Bhartiya Samajwadi Party.

He might have made these " disclosures" to suggest that his rival camp has already decided to split the party and that he was and is still in favour of unity as he has formed and nurtured it with his " sweat and blood".

Akhilesh has made his intention known. " I want to lead the party only till assembly elections", he has often said. May be he wants to lead the party till that time to have a final say in selection of party candidates for the election fearing that his supporters may be ignored and not allotted party symbols otherwise, The fear may or may not be unfounded.
