Gujarat HC acquits Maya Kodnani in Naroda Patiya case

Gandhi Nagar: Gujarat High Court, on Friday acquitted former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minister Maya Kodnani in the 2000 Gujarat riots case (Naroda Patiya massacre). The court has also held Babubhai Patel alias Babu Bajrangi guilty and upheld his conviction.

The verdict was given by a division bench of the Gujarat High Court while hearing 11 appeal petitions moved by the convicts, the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the families of the victims of the riots. It is to be mentioned that division bench of justices Harsha Devani and AS Supehia had reserved its order in August 2017.

Suresh Langado alias Richard Chhara was also found guilty by the court while Kodnani’s personal assistant, Kirpal Singh Chhabra, who was convicted by the trial court was acquitted.

Earlier, Kodnani was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court. It was alleged that she had incited mob to exact revenge for the deaths of kar sevaks killed in the Godhra train carnage in 2002.
