Agra: Hundreds of women on Thursday gathered on Yamuna river bank here to demand prompt and effective action to save the Yamuna river which they dubbed a symbol of womanhood.

Former Mayors Baby Rani and Anjula Singh Mahaur, several corporators, leaders from various political parties, animal rights activists, environmentalists and social activists joined in the Women's Day celebrations at the river bank, and urged the state government to take effective steps to save the river.

"The pathetic condition of the Yamuna should have evoked alarm but neither the people of Agra nor politicians have woken up to an imminent threat to its heritage in the city," activist Nidhi Pathak said.
