New Delhi: Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh are locking horns for the Nidahas Trophy 2018. So far, all the teams have managed to a win out of two matches played so far.

People have been guessing over the name of the series, Nidahas Trophy, as most of them had never heard about the series before.

So here we are with ten interesting facts about the triangular Twenty20 International (T20I) tournament:

  1. 'Nidahas' is a Sanskrit word which means 'independence'.
  2. The tournament was first organised in 1998 to mark the 50th year of independence of Sri Lanka.
  3. The first edition of the tournament was played between Sri Lanka, India and New Zealand.
  4. This is the first time Twenty20 format has been introduced in the tournament. Earlier it used to be One-Day triangular series.
  5. This year, a total of seven matches will be played, while each team will participate in four. The top two teams in the points table will meet in the final.
  6. The main motto of the series has always been collecting funds for social service.
  7. Sri Lankan, Indian and New Zealand teams were led by Arjuna Ranatunga, Mohammed Azharuddin and Stephen Fleming in the first edition of the tournament.
  8. India and Sri Lanka had reached into the final in the first edition in 1998 and India had managed to win a cliffhanger by 6 runs.
  9. Sachin Tendulkar was named man of the match for his tremendous 128-run inning, while Arvinda de Silva was named player of the tournament for scoring 368 runs.
  10. Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly had added 252 runs for the first wicket to lay the foundation stone of the series victory.
