Depression is quite common in today’s youth because of career related stress, family tension, breakups in relationships. It can be worse at different times of the day but some people feel it especially in the mornings. According to the WHO (World Health Organization) mental or behavioral disorder is growing in India. Every sixth Indian needs mental health help.

When you wake up with the low energy or feel sadness before starting the day, doctors call it Morning Depression. This term is only used when the symptoms of depression appear in the morning. Morning depression is called “Diurnal mood variation”. In this state mood swings happen in a person in the morning but it looks normal in the afternoon. Signs of the Morning depression:

  • Sad, anxious, lack of energy
  • Less Energy to start your day
  • Feel cranky
  • More nap requirement
  • Frustrating
  • Changes in Diet
  • Feeling lonely
  • Feeling sad before doing any work

According to the Centers for disease control and prevention, some other factors may be include in morning depression like:

  • Depression in your family member
  • Any medical problem
  • High use of Alcohol
  • Use of any medicine
  • Past bad experience
  • Trauma

Dr. Varun S. Mehta Associate professor at Central Institute of Psychiatric (CIP), Ranchi says that Morning depression is also called typical depression. Typical depression is worst, sometimes a person doesn’t have any symptom of depression. In this case it is called a typical depression. Sometimes having anger issues or getting fret can be a part of someone’s nature. Getting fret can’t be consider as a depression but depression can be a reason of this. Morning depression occurs at around same time every day. Experts suggest that circadian rhythm may be a factor.

What is Circadian Rhythm?

According to the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) Circadian Rhythm is the 24- hour internal clock in our brain that regulates cycle of alertness and sleepiness by responding to light changes in our environment.

How to overcome depression:

To overcome this problem, you can change your daily routine like:

  • Make schedule for your sleep
  • Do proper meditation
  • Do physical exercise
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking
  • Try not to think about your past
  • Take healthy food
