FIR registered against Priya Prakash's viral song for hurting Muslim sentiments
Hyderabad: After Priya Prakash Varrier gained national as well as international attention, an FIR has been lodged at the Falaknuma Police Station here by a group of Muslim people against the song 'Manikya malaraya poovi' from the Malayalam movie Oru Adaar Love, said the sources on Wednesday.
A small clip of the video featuring 18-year-old actor Priya Prakash Varrier has been a huge trend not only in India, but in neighboring Pakistan and Egypt also.
One of the complainants, Muqeet Khan, claims that the video insults Prophet Mohammad.
"After listening to the song, I went for the translation of the lyrics," he said, adding, "The translation is about our Prophet."
He asserted that a boy and a girl were shown romancing while the name of the prophet is taken in the background. He claimed that he had lodged the complaint to exercise his freedom of speech.
He, however, clarified that he had nothing against the movie, the actor or the song itself.
Here is the official song:
The movie Oru Adaar Love is scheduled to hit theatres this Eid by the end of June.
As per the director of the movie, Omar Lulu, Manikya Malaraya Poovi means "a pearl flower that is very precious". He further said that the song is based on the love story of Prophet Mohammad and his first wife.
"People around the country, or rather around the world, are loving it," Lulu said. "But there has been some opposition from some old Muslims in the community. They feel that a love song that is about the Prophet Muhammad and his wife in a film is insulting to Islam. But these people are in a small minority."
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Falaknuma) Syed Faiyaz, however, said that no FIR has been registered into the matter yet.
