Lucknow: As the world observes Autism day in the month of April, experts have estimated that prevalence rate of autism in India is 1 in every two hundred and fifty individuals and currently ten million people in India suffer from Autism.

Although people with autism are generally treated as mentally retarded, studies have shown that autism is a neurological disorder. It is a hidden disability which doesn’t just affect children. The autistic children grow up to be autistic adults.The first case of Autism was recognised in 2001.

Symptoms of Autism:

  • Experts say that the disorder presents itself in the first three years since the child birth.
  • It is the disorder that has an effect on normal brain function, affecting normal brain function, communication and social interaction skills.
  • It is a hidden disability and you cannot always predict if someone has it.
  • There are no medical test for it diagnosis.

Is autism a genetic disorder?

  • In many families, the pattern of the disorder appears to be related which supports that it is a genetic disorder.
  • The cause of autism could be a combination of genetic and environmental factors according to the research.
