You know the feeling when you have cooked a heavy-duty meal comprising of a bowl of lentil, a vegetable, and chapatis, and the moment you sit down to have your food, you suddenly feel as if something is missing. You feel the need for something spicy and tangy to accompany your meal.

At moments like these, tomato chutney can come to your rescue! It is full of flavours and is the perfect thing to elevate your super simple meal to a rich and tangy one. It is very easy to make and goes well with every dish possible! So, here is an easy 5-step recipe to make this delicious tomato chutney at home.

Step 1

In a pan, pour 2 tbsp sesame oil and let it heat. Once hot, add 2-3 tbsp mustard seeds in it and let them splutter.

Step 2

Add ½ tsp split urad dal in the oil along with ½ tsp fenugreek seeds and a pinch of asafoetida. Roughly chop 2-3 tomatoes and add them to the pan followed by a handful of curry leaves.

Step 3

To season the chutney, add ¼ tsp turmeric powder, ½ tsp red chilli powder, and salt according to taste. Saute this on medium flame till the tomatoes have become soft.

Step 4

Add some water to give it the right consistency. Once you feel that the tomatoes have cooked all the way through and their peel is coming off, that is when you start crushing them with the back of the spoon.

Step 5

Crush the tomatoes till there are no visible chunks. Remove from heat and serve it with your favourite dish.
