Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh government has announced to provide free school bags to students up to class eighth of the government schools in the state. Over 1.6 crore students of primary and upper primary schools will be benefited under the scheme.

It may be mentioned that the Odisha and the Tamil Nadu governments had earlier distributed school bags to students of the states for free.

Other highlights:

  • According to sources, each bag will cost Rs 120-130 to the government.
  • The ruling Samajwadi Party will be spending almost 200 crore on the policy.
  • It will be government’s gift to students who cannot afford school bags.
  • From last Monday onwards, the government has also started distributing fruits to students in mid-day meal.
