Lucknow: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has claimed that the law and order situation has improved noticeably in his state following introduction of prohibition and, therefore, he has advised his counterpart in Uttar Pradesh to do likewise.

Going by recent official reports , it appears that he has just patted himself. The ground reality is different from what he has been claiming. For instance, son of a supporting party Member of Legislative Council has killed a student in his capital town of Patna.

A couple of days later a journalist was killed by goons of a jailed former Member of Parliament. These are two major instances of crime following prohibition introduce d last month. There can be more which has gone unreported.

All this looks all the more alarming considered in the light of the nature of crime. The student, in the first instance was killed just for overtaking the MLC”s above rupees one crore car. And it was not his first offence of the kind.

In the second case ,the conspiracy to kill the newspaper man was hatched inside the jail where the former MP has been lodged. The newsman’s crime?

He had 'leaked', to quote the leader of opposition in Bihar assembly, Sushil Modi, picture of a Bihar cabinet minister meeting the don in jail. Clearly, in both the cases killing was done for no strong reason. If Nitish calls it improvement in the law and order situation there will not be many to buy it. U P will be much better without accepting his 'pro-prohibition' advice.
