IPL 10 GL vs DD: Shreyas Iyer onslaught guides Delhi to 2-wicket win

Kanpur: Shreyas Iyer played one of the finest Indian Premier League (IPL) knocks ever to lead Delhi Daredevils (DD) to a thunderous two-wicket win over Gujarat Lions (GL) at the Green park stadium here on Wednesday.

Iyer scored 96 runs off 57 balls and decorated his inning with 15 flourishing fours and 2 sixes, to help Delhi comprehensively chase down a huge target of 196 runs in a nail-biting encounter. He, however, missed out on a deserving hundred by just 4 runs following a cross-batted shot on a Yorker delivery by Basil Thampi in the final over.

After his departure, Amit Mishra smashed Thampi for two consecutive boundaries to seal the fifth win for his team in the tournament. Mohammed Shami had also succeeded in hitting a boundary in his 4-run unbeaten inning due to a misfielding by Ankit Soni.

Sanju Samson was the first to depart as he got out at the individual score of 10 runs off 7 deliveries with 2 boundaries. His opening partner, Karun Nair played some fine shots during his aggressive 30-run inning that came off only 15 balls and was laced with 5 fours and a six.

Rishabh Pant, who had scored 97 runs in the previous match against Gujarat this season to help his team chase a humongous target of 209 runs, could only score 4 runs today. He fell prey to an unfortunate run out because of his inexperience, which was fully utilized by GL skipper Suresh Raina.

Marlon Samuels (1 off 4), Corey Anderson (6 off 6) and Carlos Braithwaite (11 off 10) also failed to show the fireworks they have been famous for in the Twenty20 Cricket. Then came Pat Cummins who partnered the crease in a crucial 61-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Shreyas Iyer to guide his team to a winnable situation in the match.

Cummins got out at the individual score of 24 runs off only 13 deliveries with the help of 2 fours and a six, when Delhi Daredevils required only 14 runs to win off 10 balls. Shreyas Iyer was the last man to return to the pavilion when his team needed seven runs to win off 4 balls. He was also awarded man of the match for his tremendous match winning performance.

James Faulkner was the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat Lions as he picked up 2 wickets for 39 runs in his four overs, while Dhawal Kulkarni, Pradeep Sangwan and basil Thampi bagged 1 wicket each. Kulkarni, Sangwan and Thampi were very expensive as they conceded 30 runs in four overs, 35 runs in 3 overs and 43 runs in 3.4 overs, respectively.
