Kanpur: Working in the lines with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Swachh Bharat Mission', Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday announced to make the state open defecation free by October 2018.

Speaking at a function here in presence of President Ram Nath Kovind and UP Governor Ram Naik, Yogi said, "We are aiming to carry PM Modi's Swachh Bharat mission forward by making UP open defecation free (ODF) by October 2018."

"We have decided to make 30 districts ODF by December 31, 201, and the entire UP by October 2018," he added.

He also pointed out the commendable works of his government during the past five months in regard to Centre's Swachh Bharat campaign.

"I am glad to say that during past five months of our regime, we have made 25 districts of the state open defecation free with the help of mass participation," he asserted.

Divulging the plans of his government, he said, "We have decided to provide 24 lakh houses to poor and Dalits by 2019. Apart from this, we well also ensure to construct a toilet for each and every poor or Dalit family across the state. To achieve the same, we will construct 78 lakh toilets by December 31 this year and over 1.5 crore toilets by October 2018."

What he said about pollution in Ganga and Yamuna rivers?

  • We are blessed to have pious rivers like Ganga and Yamuna flowing across our state.
  • But unfortunately, we have contaminated both the rivers so badly that their water has become very unhealthy.
  • We need mass participation to keep these rivers clean.
  • Ganga river looks most contaminated in Kanpur itself.
  • It is very important to get rid of this situation as soon as possible.
