Traditional Ram leela of Ayodhya makes a comeback after Yogi's intervention

Lucknow: After a break of several months, the popular traditional Ram Leela at Ayodhya made a comeback, after the intervention of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The event that had been discontinued owing to lack of budget and disinterest by previous state government, was again rolled out on Wednesday evening, on the premises of the Ayodhya Research Institute.

The Ram Leela will be enacted by the Avadh Aadarsh Ramleela Mandal of Mahant Jayram Das between May 3 and May 17, while from May 18 to June 1, Dr Harihar's Balaji Ram Leela Mandli will stage its shows.

Quick Facts:

  • The daily shows of the epic Ram Leela in Ayodhya was started by former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mulayam Singh Yadav, on 20 May 2004.
  • They were, however, stopped abruptly during the previous Akhilesh Yadav government November, 24 2015 after the state’s culture department refused to grant aid for the same.
  • The department has ordered to resume the shows after sanctioning a handsome budget for the dramatic enactment of the mythological stage show after Present CM Yogi Adityanath’s intervention.

Ram Teerath, assistant manager of the Ayodhya Research Centre, said, “Today we started the first show of Ram Leela, and now we hope that the shows will run continuously without any hurdles. We have received all official orders from the culture department.”
