Lucknow: In the first of its kind medical feat in the Armed Forces, , the Command Hospital at Lucknow carried out successfully a unique liver resection (hepatectomy) without opening the abdomen (laparoscopically).

Colonel K J Singh of Command Hospital, Lucknow, who led the team of doctors to carry out this unique liver resection on a 51 years old lady, said she came with a history of pain in abdomen of six months duration. She was diagnosed with a tumor in the left side of the liver. Therefore the diseased liver and the tumor both were required to be removed.

Colonel K J Singh said that this laparoscopic surgery was carried out through 5 key hole incisions using specialized energy devices and staplers over 4 hours and removal of a part of affected liver in a special laparoscopic retrieval bag by increasing the size of one of the ports.

Conventional surgery would have entailed a major operation with opening of the abdomen and a long period of recovery. Though challenging, laparoscopic surgery through key hole ports on abdomen, results in faster recovery and fewer post-operative complications, he claimed.
