New Delhi: Whatsapp users are being asked to download 'WhatsApp Gold' which is said to be an 'exclusive' version of the app but actually it infects the smartphones with malware .

Many users have reported receiving messages urge them to sign up for the service via WhatsApp Gold website which is linked in the message. But the whole thing is fake and downloading the program from the website will simply infect your phone with malware, possibly allowing cybercriminals to steal your data or track your movements and activity.

This new scam is similar to the previous 'WhatsApp Plus' scam. WhatsApp has already said that it will ban the devices that include this unauthorised malware. "WhatsApp Plus is an application that was not developed by WhatsApp, nor is it authorised by WhatsApp," says the company in its FAQ page.

What was WhatsApp Gold earlier said to be:

  • It was said that 'WhatsApp Gold' was until now used by 'big celebrities'.
  • It includes big features likes video calling, ability to send 100 images at once, free calling, ability to change WhatsApp themes and more.
  • The message also says that the 'WhatsApp Gold' is not available to all users and can be installed only via invitation.

According to recent reports,

  • WhatsApp is now the most popular instant messaging application in 109 countries which is roughly 55.6% of the world.
  • WhatsApp has over a billion monthly active users .
