New Delhi: 'Now I can die in peace'. This quotable quote of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banejee will reverberate through the ears of many state politicians and people for a long time to come.

She was reacting to Supreme Court’s cancellation on Wednesday of allotment of land in Singur district which was given to the Tatas for manufacturing Nano small car which was later done in Gujarat.

“I was waiting for the supreme court’s order for a long time. The wait is over”, said an excited Mamata who had battled for the return of land to farmers for a long time.

The court has not only cancelled the allotment and ordered for the return of the land to the owners within 12 weeks but made a scathing attack on the then left government headed by Buddhadeb Bhattacharya. He had "misused his power and authority" in this case.

Expectedly, farmers who had lost their land were jubilant also because the compensation paid to them for acquiring the land was not to be returned.

The main reason for the apex court ruling against the deal was that it was acquired by the government in 2006 in public interest and then it was handed over to a private company.
