Weather Updates: IMD issues heavy rain alert in 6 States including Kerala

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for seven states and union territories for the next four days. Presently Kerala is facing heavy rainfall and rain related difficulties.

The India Meteorological Department predicted heavy rains in the southern state of Kerala from Saturday to continue till Tuesday. Earlier in the day, a red alert was sounded in three districts - Idukki, Thrissur and Ernakulam.

Heavy Rain in Kerala:

At 2 pm on Sunday, a shutter of the Idukki dam has been opened with a width of 40 cm to reduce the pressure of the overflowing reservoir. Meanwhile, the Mullaperiyar dam is also likely to be opened as its water level continues to rise amid heavy rains in Kerala. According to the Meteorological Department, in view of heavy rains in Kerala due to westerly winds, the authorities and the people need to be very cautious.


According to the IMD bulletin, a low pressure area lies over central Arabian Sea, with its west-northwestward movement and well marked over North Andaman Sea and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal till November 15.

IMD issues Alert:

The low pressure will continue to move in the same direction and intensify into a storm over west-central Bay of Bengal by November 17 and reach south Andhra Pradesh coast by November 18.

One cyclonic storm lies over South Karnataka and neighboring North Tamil Nadu, and the other lies over Southeast Arabian Sea. The IMD bulletin said that the circulation over Arabian Sea is expected to continue for the next two days.

Apart from these, a new low pressure area is expected to form over east-central Arabian Sea off south Maharashtra and Goa coasts around November 17, IMD said. Due to these conditions, heavy rains as well as inclement weather have been predicted in seven states and union territories.
