Biting Cold Hits North India: Severe Weather Alert for Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh

New Delhi: People in several states of the country are currently facing the brunt of intense cold accompanied by dense fog, making life challenging. This has also affected train and air travel. The Meteorological Department predicts the activation of a western disturbance today, leading to the possibility of rain in several northern states of India. Additionally, an alert for cold days to severe cold days has been issued for some parts of the country.

In the capital city, Delhi, Monday marked the coldest day of the year with a minimum temperature recorded at 5.3 degrees Celsius, equivalent to Nainital. Various districts in Uttar Pradesh are also expected to experience disrupted weather conditions today. An alert for dense fog has been issued in different districts of the state. The Meteorological Department has warned of rain and hailstorms along with strong winds in some areas, posing potential difficulties for the residents.

Delhi Turns Nainital:

The Meteorological Department suggests that due to the activity of the western disturbance, Delhi may witness light rain on Tuesday. Additionally, there is a possibility of mild fog in the morning. The dense fog on Monday led to the delay of 47 flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Monday in Delhi remained extremely cold.

According to the Meteorological Department, Monday was recorded as the coldest day of the year in Delhi, with a minimum temperature reaching 5.3 degrees Celsius. The temperature in Delhi on Monday matched that of Nainital.

Alert for Rain and Hailstorms in UP:

Uttar Pradesh is not expected to get relief from dense fog anytime soon. An alert has been issued for rain and hailstorms along with strong winds in some districts of the state. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in parts of western and central Uttar Pradesh, while cities like Lucknow, Varanasi, and Prayagraj may experience light to moderate rainfall.

Orange alerts for dense fog have been issued in several districts, and yellow alerts for fog cover 60 districts. Muzaffarnagar recorded the lowest temperature in the last 24 hours, where the minimum temperature was 4.8 degrees Celsius. Varanasi recorded the highest maximum temperature, reaching 23.2 degrees Celsius.

Warnings for Other Regions:

The Meteorological Department predicts the likelihood of dense fog and thick fog persisting until the morning of January 10 in various parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Bihar. Delhi-NCR experienced fog on Monday and Tuesday mornings.

The weather in the capital is expected to change today, leading to the possibility of light rain. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, and Karaikal are also expected to receive rain until January 10. Rainfall is anticipated in Andhra Pradesh until the same date.

According to SkyMet Weather, during the next 24 hours, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in some parts of Tamil Nadu and the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh. Light to moderate rain is possible in the interior regions of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Karnataka, Goa, and parts of central Maharashtra may experience light to moderate rain at one or two locations.

Light rain is possible in the eastern parts of Gujarat, eastern Rajasthan, and some parts of Madhya Pradesh. Some areas in Punjab, Haryana, western Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar may face severe to very severe fog. Dense fog in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Odisha, and northeastern India could pose challenges for the residents.

Certain parts of Punjab and Haryana may encounter a cold day to severe cold day situation. Rajasthan and different areas in Delhi may also experience cold day conditions.
