Weather Update: Heavy Rainfall in Delhi, 'Highest in last 19 years'

New Delhi: The heavy rain has started once again in Delhi-NCR. Today is the third day of continuous rain in the national capital. Yesterday, rain had broken the record of 19 years.

After many years, the record for the highest rainfall was made in a single day. Due to torrential rains, Delhi and its adjoining areas were waterlogged since early morning and the capital continued to struggle with traffic jams throughout the day. It's raining again. There is a possibility of a situation like this tomorrow.

Record breaking Rain in Delhi:

Incessant rain in Delhi for two days broke the record of 19 years yesterday. 112.1 mm of rain has been recorded in 24 hours. This is the highest rainfall in a single day in 19 years. Earlier in the year 2002, 126.8 mm of rain was recorded. This is the fifth time in 61 years from 1961 to 2021 that September received so much rain in 21 hours. Due to this, the maximum temperature dropped by six degrees above normal and the minimum by three degrees above normal. Even today, it is raining intermittently in many parts of Delhi-NCR since morning.


IMD Forecast & Report:

According to the Meteorological Department, Delhi receives an average of 125.1 mm of rain in September, while this time it received 112.1 mm of rain in 24 hours on the very first day. That is, 90 percent of September's rainfall has happened in a single day.

112.1 mm of rain was recorded till 8.30 am on Wednesday, while 76.5 mm of rain was recorded till 5.30 pm. In this way, 188.6 mm of rain fell in 33 hours. The highest rainfall was recorded at Lodi Road center at 120.2 mm till 8.30 am and 75.8 mm till 5.30 pm. The Ridge recorded 81.6 mm of rain till 8.30 am and 52.0 mm till 5.30 pm. Palam recorded 71.1 mm of rain till 8.30 am and 80.6 mm till 5.30 pm.

Yellow Alert:

Due to rain, the maximum temperature was recorded 6 degrees below normal at 28.7 degrees Celsius and the minimum was recorded at 24 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal.

The Meteorological Department has also issued a yellow alert of rain for September 2 and 3. There is a possibility of rain on September 3 and 4. After September 4, the temperature will start increasing. By September 7, the temperature will climb up to 36 degrees.
