5.8 quake hits Uttarakhand, tremors felt across Delhi-NCR and north India

Dehradun: A medium intensity earthquake of 5.8 magnitude on Monday shook the Delhi-NCR and Uttarakhand at around 10: 35 pm.

Few parts of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana also experienced tremors. Panicked people, in order to save themselves from any danger, rushed out of their houses. As per official reports, the tremors lasted for 30 seconds.

The epicentre of the quake was Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, said J L Gautam, Operations head at the National Seismological Bureau, a unit of Ministry of Earth Sciences. The depth of the quake was 33 km, he added.

No loss of life and property has been reported yet. NDRF teams were deployed to the area.

Praying for the safety of the people, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Twitter, said he is taking stock of the situation.
