Uniform Civil Code Bill introduced in Uttarakhand Assembly

After the enactment of the law, Uttarakhand will be the first state in the country to implement UCC after independence. UCC has been in force in Goa since the days of Portuguese rule.

Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill has been introduced in the Uttarakhand Assembly today. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami tabled the UCC Bill in the House. After which slogans of Jai Shri Ram started echoing in the house. The special session of Uttarakhand Assembly has started on Monday and today the UCC Bill has been introduced on the second day of the session.

After the enactment of the law, Uttarakhand will be the first state in the country to implement UCC after independence. UCC has been in force in Goa since the days of Portuguese rule. Under the UCC, the same laws regarding marriage, divorce, alimony, land, property and succession will apply to all citizens of the state, irrespective of their religion.

Before presenting the UCC bill, Chief Minister of the state Pushkar Singh Dhami made a post on X today and wrote, with the aim of giving equal rights to the citizens of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand, a Uniform Civil Code bill will be presented in the Assembly today. After the UCC Bill is presented in the House, it will now be discussed. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had requested MLAs from other parties to participate in the discussion. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had said to participate in the discussion in a positive manner, for the upliftment of mother power, for the people of every sect, every community, every religion living within the state.

Before the beginning of the session, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had said that UCC will be good for all sections and there is no need to worry about it. He also requested members of other political parties to discuss the bill in a positive manner in the House.

The state cabinet on Sunday accepted the UCC draft and approved tabling it in the House as a bill on February 6. This draft of 740 pages in four volumes was submitted to the Chief Minister by a five-member committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai.

One of the major promises made by the BJP to the public during the assembly elections held in the year 2022 was to make an Act on UCC and implement it in the state.
