New Delhi: Over Rs 1.64 crore unaccounted money submitted into Jan Dhan accounts across India was seized by the Income Tax Department on Friday.

The seized accounts belong to West Bengal, Ara in Bihar, Kochi, Kolkata, Midnapore and Varanasi, while Rs 40 lakh were seized in a single account in Bihar.

According to the reports, in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh, the 7,000 Jan Dhan accounts in various banks have registered deposits of more than the prescribed limit of Rs 50,000. Many of those accounts have seen deposits of more than Rs 2.5 lakh.

Observing such a huge surge in deposits in these accounts, the I-T department seized them on RBI's instructions. The Reserve Bank of India has also sent notices to these bank account holders.

  • The district has 3,91,000 Jan Dhan accounts, which were opened under the Centre's scheme.
  • Till November 8, when the government brought demonetisation into effect, most of these accounts were empty.
  • These Jan Dhan accounts saw an unexpected surge in deposits since November 8.
  • RBI closely monitored these accounts and imposed a ban on deposits.
  • All these bank accounts would be probed on Saturday.

According to Lead Bank Manager Satish Kumar, "Sambhal district has 3,91,000 Jan Dhan accounts which were opened under government's scheme. Since demonetisation, around 7,000 such accounts have seen deposits worth lakhs which prompted the authorities to block them. A meeting has been called on December 3 to review these accounts."
