There was freezing cold in many parts of North India and some central parts of the country on Saturday as the maximum temperature dropped by two to 10 degrees Celsius. Rail and road traffic was affected due to dense fog in the Ganga plains and surrounding central and eastern parts of the country.

The weather office said that the cold led to 'severe cold day' conditions at many places in Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab, while 'cold day' conditions remained in some parts of Delhi and northern Madhya Pradesh. Due to lack of sunlight in the areas, the maximum temperature remained between 10 to 18 degrees Celsius.

A 'cold day' occurs when the temperature falls below 10 °C and the maximum temperature falls 4.5 to 6.4 °C below the season's normal temperature. At the same time, a 'severe cold day' occurs when the maximum temperature falls below 6.5 degrees Celsius and more.

Delhi's primary weather station, Safdarjung Observatory, recorded a maximum temperature of 14.6 degrees Celsius, which is five degrees below the normal temperature for this season.

The maximum temperature recorded in Ambala, Haryana was 10 degrees Celsius, which is 7.5 degrees below normal. The temperature in Patiala, Punjab was recorded at 11.1 degrees Celsius, which is 7.5 degrees Celsius less than this season's average.

The temperature in Sikar, Rajasthan reached 12.5 degrees Celsius, which is 10 degrees below the normal for this season. At the same time, the maximum temperature in Guna, Madhya Pradesh was recorded at 13.7 degrees Celsius, which is 10 degrees less than normal.

India Meteorological Department said that cold day to severe cold day conditions are likely to continue in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan for the next two days. After this the cold will start reducing.

A statement said, 'Dense fog will remain over northwest India during the next two days and after that it will gradually reduce.'
