SC issues notice to EC over allegations of EVMs tampering

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to the Election Commission after hearing a petition that alleges that the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used in recently concluded Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections were doctored.

The petitioner has sought testing of the EVMs by the experts in America.

It may be mentioned that after the declaration of results of Assembly elections in five states on March 11, many leaders from different political parties claimed that the EVMs were intentionally tampered to benefit Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the polls.

EC, however, has rubbished the allegations claiming that the machines were working properly and could not be tampered.

An apex court bench of CJI Jagdish Singh Khehar, Justice Sanjay Krishna Kaul and Justice DY Chandrachud heard the petition filed by advocate Manohar Lal Sharma, which demands testing of the EVMs alleging that the machines were doctored.

What Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati had alleged?

  • Looking at the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election results, it seems that the EVM did not accept votes given to any other parties except BJP.
  • It is also possible that the votes secured by others parties were also counted in BJP's account.
  • BJP got most of the votes even in Muslim populous constituencies.
  • This clearly indicates that the EVMs were tampered.
  • I openly challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah to cancel these elections and order re-polling through ballot papers if they are clean.

What senior Congress leader Raj Babbar had said?

  • EVMs have been doctored to benefit BJP.
  • The Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance was clearly going to win the polls.
  • But BJP misused money power to influence the results in its favour.
