SC asks Centre to introduce national action plan for drug abuse
The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Centre to introduce the national action plan, within six months, to curb the rising drugs and alcohol abuse cases among school children.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday directed the Centre to introduce the national action plan, within six months, to curb the rising drugs and alcohol abuse cases among school children.
The SC said, it has been observed that these children were encouraged to become drug peddlers once they get addicted.
The decision was passed by division bench comprising Chief Justice TS Thakur and DY Chandrachud on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by NGO Bachpan Bachao Andolan of Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi in 2014.
The SC has asked the Centre to conduct a national survey on the substance and alcohol abuse and use of psychotropic substances among children in schools across the country.
About the PIL:
- The plea filed by the NGO had sought a direction to formulate an action plan for children on drugs and substance abuse.
- It had sought setting up of rehabilitation and de-addiction centres in each district of the country with a special children wing.
- All the issues of identification, investigation, counselling and rehabilitation were also included in the PIL.
- The NGO was represented by senior advocate HS Phoolka.
