Rajiv Mehrishi sworn in as new CAG of India

New Delhi: Former Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi sworned in as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India on Monday.

The oath of office and secrecy was administered by President Ram Nath Kovind at an event in the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The event also marked the presence of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi among other dignitaries.

Rajiv Mehrishi succeeds Shashi Kant Sharma, who demitted the office on Friday last.

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) is appointed for a term of six years or till the incumbent attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.

The 62-year old Mehrishi will have a tenure of about three years.

About Rajiv Mehrishi:

• He is a 1978-batch retired Indian Administrative Service officer of Rajasthan cadre.
• He completed his two year fixed term as the home secretary last month.
• Mehrishi is a resident of Rajasthan and holds a degree in Master of Business Administration from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (UK).
• He also possesses Master of Arts (MA) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees from Delhi University.
• Before his appointment as the Home Secretary, he worked as Economic Affairs Secretary and Chief Secretary is Rajasthan government.
• Mehrishi has also worked as a secretary in departments of chemicals and fertilizers, and Overseas Indian Affairs.

About Shashi Kant Sharma:

• He took charge as the CAG on May 23, 2013.
• He was defence secretary prior to his appointment as the CAG.
