Patna: Heaping praises on former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Bharatiya Janata Party senior leader Subramanian Swamy on Sunday said he was the only Congress leader who contributed for the betterment of Hindus and wanted Ram Mandir to be constructed in Ayodhya.

"It was only Rajiv Gandhi who was concerned about Hindus in the Nehru-Gandhi family. He was the only 'Hindu neta' in Congress who wanted Ram Mandir to be constructed," said Subramanian Swamy while addressing a conference at Bharatiya Nritya Kala Mandir here.

He said despite facing opposition from senior leaders of Congress, Rajiv Gandhi allowed the telecast of 'Ramayana' on Doordarshan. Swamy said he was the one who unlocked the Ram temple at Ayodhya re-open for Hindus.

“Be it the unlocking of Ram Mandir or telecast of Ramayana on Doordarshan, Rajiv Gandhi was the man behind the same,” said Swamy.
