Congress candidate from Karanpur assembly seat in Rajasthan Gurmeet Singh Kunnar died on Wednesday morning.

Kunnar, who had earlier become a minister after winning as an independent, had filed his nomination as a Congress candidate on November 4. Recently, he was admitted to AIIMS, Delhi due to ill health.

After the death of Kunnar, the polling on the seat has been countermanded. Now voting will be held on only 199 seats in Rajasthan. The cause of death of MLA Kunnar is said to be lung infection. Ruby Kunnar, son of MLA Gurmeet Singh Kunnar, will take his mortal remains to his native village Bibi, where his last rites will be performed tomorrow.

It is noteworthy that Gurmeet Singh Kunnar was born in village 25 Bibi near Padampur town of Sriganganagar district. MLA Gurmeet Singh, educated till class 12, first reached the Assembly in 1998 by winning on a Congress ticket, then won as an independent in 2008 and once again won the elections in 2018 on a Congress ticket.

Gurmeet Singh Kunnar started his political career in 1980 from the post of Sarpanch. In 1988, he became the head of Panchayat Samiti Padampur and in 1995 he also became the Deputy District Head. In this assembly election, Congress had once again made him its candidate.

Gurmeet Singh Kunnar had recently announced that his son Ruby Kunnar would contest the elections, but due to the pressure of the people, he himself decided to contest the election.
