Prime Minister to review working of Agriculture Ministry on Friday

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called a meeting on Friday to review the progress made by new schemes related to agriculture sector which are aimed at doubling the income of farmers by the year 2022.

The review meeting will be attended, among others, by the top officials of the Agriculture ministry. The meeting may discuss some new proposals to accelerate annual growth in this sector which is necessary to achieve the new objective.

A farmer at present has annual income not exceeding Rs 12,000 which has to jump to Rs 24000 in next five years.

To achieve this objective the government has taken some new initiatives. One of them is to set up additional purchase centre where a farmer can sell his produce directly without middle men who take away a part of income.

Creating better infrastructural facilities and increasing areas of assured irrigation are some other moves to change the scenario in this sector and increase farmers' earning.

These moves may enhance farm production and lead to higher contribution to the Gross Domestic Product or GDP. Agriculture , at present, accounts for only 15 per cent to the total.

Luckily for him, weathermen have predicted a normal monsoon this year which may lead to better Kharif coverage and production. Rabi production may be better too following normal rainfall during the season.
