The central government is going to make a national security strategy for the first time.

According to the reports, the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) is formulating a comprehensive national security strategy in consultation with several central ministries and departments.

Once the plan is formulized, it will be sent to the cabinet for its approval. Countries like the US and UK have published national security strategies which are updated from time to time. This will help military and security related groups.

The purpose of bringing out the National Security Policy in the form of a document is to put together the national security objectives and the methods to be adopted to achieve them. According to media reports, many ministries have sent complete information about the challenges and threats faced in security to the Secretariat. These include non-traditional challenges such as financial and economic security, food and energy security as well as threats related to information warfare and information systems.

Military and security personnel have repeatedly stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive national security strategy. Before this, attempts have been made thrice to formulate such a strategy.

Former Army Chief General MM Naravane had said that it is necessary to prepare a national security strategy before taking the theaterization process forward.

Former National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon had said that India needs a national security strategy that can inform our thinking on important issues.

According to the experts, such a comprehensive strategy will go a long way in preparing for the future and face the challenges arising out of any type of conflict.
