One policeman killed, 14 injured in grenade attack in Srinagar

Kashmir: In a grenade attack by the militants, one policeman lost his life while 14 other got injured in old Srinagar’s Nowhatta area.

The deceased cop, identified as Shamim Ahmad, belonged to North Kashmir’s Gurez area. Among the 14 injured, four were CRPF jawans.

The grenade was hurled at a police party next to Ganjbaksh Park in Nowhatta area at around 7 pm. The policemen were returning home after completing their shifts.

It may be mentioned that Kashmir was observing a shutdown due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the state for inaugurating Asia's largest road tunnel – the Chenani-Nashri tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar highway.

According to the official sources, 14 policemen were injured in the grenade blast. They were immediately rushed to the nearby hospital. A few stone pelting incidents were also reported in the area earlier in the day.

Earlier on Saturday also, the militants had targeted an army convoy in Srinagar's Bemina region. In the attack, three jawans had sustained injuries.

Banned militant organisation Tehreeq-ul-Mujahideen took the responsibility of the attack through an email to various news organisations.

In its press release, the organisation claimed that they were targeting the CRPF officials and never intended to attack Kashmir Police.
