New Delhi: The Supreme Court, on Friday, upheld the death sentence given to the four convicts of the infamous Nirbhaya Rape Case that took place in the nation's capital in 2012.

The SC said, "taking the serious injuries, the severe nature of offence committeed by the convicts, we are upholding the sentence."

It could be mentioned that the death penalty was given to the convicts by the fast track court in September 2013 and was upheald by the Delhi High Court in year 2014. The decision has further been supported by the Supreme Court, today.

The judgement was pronounced a division bench comprised of justices Dipak Misra, R Banuathi and Ashok Bhushan at 1400 hours in court no.2 on the appeals filed by four death row convicts namely Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh who had challenged the Delhi High Court's decision, sentencing them to gallows and stating that it was a rarest of the rare case.

Nirbhaya case:

  • Six people including a juvenile had, on December 16, 2012, gang raped and killed a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus. The woman died in a Singapore hospital on December 29, 2012 during her treatment.
  • The Delhi High court had convicted all the six men and had awarded them death sentence in year 2014. Vinay Sharma along with other convicts had approached the Supreme Court against the HC order but the SC had upheld the order by the trial court.
  • Another convict Ram Singh had hanged himself inside Tihar jail in 2013 while the juvenile convict was released in December last after he served three years in a reformation home. The other convicts are serving their jail term.
