New Delhi: In response to the escalating prices of tomatoes nationwide, fast-food giant McDonald's has made the decision to temporarily remove the humble vegetable from its menu.

Numerous Twitter users have shared images of notice boards displayed at McDonald's outlets, explaining the chain's inability to procure an adequate supply of tomatoes that meet their stringent quality standards. The notice reads, "Dear Customers, we are dedicated to serving you the finest food made with the best ingredients. Despite our best efforts, we are currently unable to obtain sufficient quantities of tomatoes that meet our world-class quality checks. Therefore, we are compelled to serve our products without tomatoes for the time being."

According to a recent report by IANS, tomato prices have surged dramatically, skyrocketing from Rs 15 per kilogram in the first week of May to a staggering Rs 120-150 per kilogram in various regions across the country.

Wholesalers have reported a doubling of vegetable prices within a week, resulting in a 40% decrease in sales. Additionally, online vegetable-selling apps have witnessed soaring rates, with Blinkit selling tomatoes at Rs 150 per kilogram and bottle gourd at Rs 61 for 400-600 grams.

The recent spike in tomato prices has been attributed to the adverse effects of heavy rainfall on the supply chain. Vegetable vendors and wholesalers point to the rains as the primary cause of disruption in tomato supply, leading to a significant surge in retail prices for this vital kitchen staple.
