Maharashtra detects 21 Delta-plus Covid Variant cases says Rajesh Tope

Mumbai: So far 21 cases of 'Delta Plus', a highly contagious variant of covid-19, have been reported in Maharashtra. State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said on Monday that the maximum number of nine cases of this variant have been reported in Ratnagiri, seven in Jalgaon, two in Mumbai and one each in Palghar, Thane and Sindhudurg districts.

Delta Variant in Maharashtra:

He told that 7,500 samples have been sent from different parts of the state for testing. These samples were collected till May 15 and their genome sequencing has been done. Genome sequencing can detect even the smallest mutations (changing variants of the virus) in SARS-CoV2.

Delta Plus covid19 variant:

Tope said that those who have been found infected with 'Delta Plus', whether they had recently traveled, whether they had got the anti-Covid-19 vaccine (Vaccination in India) and whether they got infected again... Other related information is being collected. The people who came in contact with him are also being identified. The Maharashtra Health Department made a presentation last week in which it was said that the new variant of the infection 'Delta Plus' could cause the third wave of covid-19 in the state.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, members of the state covid-19 task force and members of the health department also attended the meeting. This new variant 'Delta Plus' is made up of a 'mutation' in the 'Delta' or 'B.1.617.2' variant that first appeared in India.

'Delta' was also one of the reasons for the second wave of infection in India. According to the state health department, after 6,270 new cases of covid-19 were reported in Maharashtra on Monday, the number of infected in the state increased to 59,79,051. At the same time, after the death of 94 more people, the death toll has increased to 1,18,313.
