JNU student ends life; father demands inquiry

New Delhi: A research scholar at the Jawahar Lal Nehru University ended his life by hanging himself in south Delhi's Munrika Vihar area on Monday.

Muthukrishnan Jeevanantham was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his friend's residence on the university campus. The reason behind the same is unknown. No suicide note was found at the spot.

Police, however, called personal issues as the reason behind the suicide of the 27-year old student.

He, in his last Facebook post, had written against discrimination faced by Dalits.

“There is no equality in M.phil/PhD Admission, there is no equality in Viva - voce, and there is only denial of equality…When equality is denied everything is denied.” the March 10 post said.

According to his friends, he was among the active students in the campaign of ‘Justice for Rohit Vemula’.

Muthukrishnan, who belonged to a poor family of Salem city, has an elder sister and two younger sisters. His father works as a watchman while his mother is a daily wage worker.

Muthukrishnan’s father has demanded a proper inquiry into the case, saying, his son was not a coward to end his life in this manner.
