It was a pre-emptive strike in self defence, says Vijay Gokhale

New Delhi: Confirming the Indian air strikes across LoC in the Pakistan occupied Kashmir, the Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said that IAF conducted a non-military operation on Jaish-e-Mohammed terror camps after receiving credible intelligence of more possible Pulwama like attacks in India and fidayeen jihadis were being trained for this purpose.

He said, "Credible information was received that JeM was attempting other attacks in the country. A pre-emptive strike became important. India struck the biggest camp of JeM in Balakot."

He said, "Large number of JeM terrorists, trainers, senior commanders were eliminated in largest JeM camp in Balakot. Camp was led by Maulana Yusuf Azhar alias Ustad Ghauri, brother in law of JeM Chief Masood Azhar."

Gokhale added, "The selection of the target was also conditioned by our desire to avoid civilian casualty. It's located in deep forest on a hilltop."

The Indian Air Force carried our air strikes at the terrorist camps across the line of control in the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) at around 3.30 am in the morning. Top government sources said that there were over 200 casualties from IAF strike.

12 Mirage 2000 jets dropped 1,000 kg bombs on the terror camp, completely destroying it.
