New Delhi: In India, more than 200 million people travel by train every day, a figure comparable to the population of large countries like Australia. For a comfortable and affordable journey, Indian Railways has remained popular among people from all income groups. In its efforts to enhance passenger experience, the railway has been making strides in improving its services, but there has been one area that has drawn continuous complaints from travelers - the food onboard.

Particularly, passengers on long-distance trains have often expressed dissatisfaction with the quality and quantity of meals offered. Despite charging higher prices, the food served is often perceived as subpar. As a result, many travelers prefer to bring their own food from home or pack it from local eateries. Taking these complaints seriously, Indian Railways has now taken the initiative to address the issue of onboard catering.

Indian Railways is set to provide economical and hygienic meals to passengers. Additionally, passengers will receive bottled water along with their meals. A new scheme is being launched, specifically catering to passengers traveling in general coaches. These are the coaches where passengers often have to go a considerable distance from their seats to purchase food and water after the train stops at platforms.

Get a Satisfying Meal at Just 20 Rupees!

Under this scheme, Indian Railways will set up stalls in front of general coaches to offer affordable meals and water. Travelers will be able to avail a wholesome meal at a mere 20 rupees. The economical meal will include seven puris (a type of bread), potato curry, and pickle.

Furthermore, the same stall will offer a snack meal for 50 rupees. Passengers can choose from options such as rajma rice, chole rice, khichdi, chole bhature, pav bhaji, kulcha, and masala dosa. They can pick any item up to 350 grams, all priced at 50 rupees.

Expanding the Scheme to Multiple Stations

Indian Railways plans to implement this scheme at all stations across the country. However, as a pilot project, it will begin at 64 identified stations. After six months, based on feedback and success, the scheme will extend to other stations as well. The selection of stations includes 29 in the East Zone, 10 in the North Zone, 9 in the South Zone, and 3 in the South Central Zone. Railway authorities assure that the positioning of these stalls will be strategically planned to avoid inconvenience to passengers.

With the introduction of this initiative, Indian Railways aims to cater to the needs of all its passengers, ensuring a more pleasant and satisfying journey for the millions who choose to travel by train every day.
