Heavy rains in Tamil Nadu, IMD issues alert, schools closed in 4 districts

According to IMD, there is a possibility of heavy rain at one or two places in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai and Thanjavur districts of Tamil Nadu on December 18.

Heavy rains in parts of Tamil Nadu severally affected normal lives and prompted the state government on Monday declared holiday in all schools, colleges, private institutions, banks and financial institutions in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and Tenkasi districts.

According to IMD, there is a possibility of heavy rain at one or two places in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai and Thanjavur districts of Tamil Nadu on December 18.

At the same time, on December 19, there is a possibility of heavy rain at one or two places in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu.

According to IMD forecast, there is a possibility of thunderstorm and lightning at one or two places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on December 19.

Kovilpatti, Ettayapuram, Vilathikulam, Kalugumalai, Kaythar, Kadambur, Vembar, Surangudi and other areas of Thoothukudi district have been receiving continuous rain since Sunday morning. Apart from this, when rain water started flowing out of the river in Kousalipatti and Inam Maniyachi areas, sandbags and JCB machines were used to stop the water.

Reports said that 40 lakes in Kovilpatti panchayat have been filled. Two lakes were damaged and we repaired them. We are also keeping a constant watch on other lakes. If there is any breach in the lake , so we are ready to fix it immediately."

The state government has taken precautionary measures to ensure the safety of the people. Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, KKSSR Ramachandran said that various precautionary measures have been taken by the government; Notably, ministers and two IAS officers have been appointed separately for the above districts and they are monitoring the work to be done.

Flood-affected people in Tirunelveli district have been brought to Thachanallur relief camp and the district administration has provided them with essential needs and food. Apart from this, heavy rains are also occurring in Tuticorin and Tenkasi districts, due to which normal life has been disrupted.
