GIFT City Lifts Liquor Ban for a Global Business Boost

In a significant move aimed at fostering a global business environment, the Gujarat government has lifted the liquor ban in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) area in Gandhinagar. This decision, just three weeks before the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Summit, signifies a pivotal shift in the region's policies.

According to the state prohibition and excise department, "GIFT City has emerged as a global financial and technological hub which is bustling with economic activities." The decision to allow 'wine and dine' facilities in GIFT City is expected to provide a conducive business ecosystem for global investors, technical experts, and national and international companies based there.

Under the new policy, hotels, restaurants, and clubs in GIFT City will be granted permits for wine and dine facilities, allowing the consumption of liquor on their premises. However, the sale of liquor bottles will not be permitted in these establishments. The official statement emphasized that individuals working in GIFT City and their official guests would have access to these facilities.

Employees and owners of GIFT City will be provided with liquor access permits, enabling them to consume liquor within the designated areas. Additionally, companies can authorize their visitors to consume liquor in the presence of regular employees using temporary permits. This flexibility is seen as a strategic move to enhance the overall business experience within GIFT City.

Spread across 886 acres, GIFT City features a 261-acre multi-service Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and a 625-acre Domestic Tariff Area (DTA). It houses the country's first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), attracting major corporations like IBM, Bank of America, HSBC, Oracle, Beefree, Citibank, and Deutsche Bank. With approximately 20,000 people estimated to be working in GIFT City, the recent decision to lift the liquor ban aligns with the city's vision to become a global hub for financial and technological activities.

While corporate giants have established offices in GIFT City, there are plans for housing projects, including high-end developments. The area boasts essential amenities such as an international school, an under-construction hospital, and a five-star hotel. The lifting of the liquor ban is expected to contribute to the vibrant and dynamic atmosphere of GIFT City, further solidifying its position on the global stage.
