Winter is settling in, and the state meteorological department has issued a forecast that might make you reach for that extra layer. Brace yourselves for a dip in minimum temperatures by 2-3 degrees in the coming week, bringing colder nights to the region.

According to Mohammad Danish, a senior scientist at the state met department, there won't be any significant temperature changes until Monday. However, starting Tuesday, northwesterly cold winds from the hill regions are expected to intensify, resulting in a noticeable drop in mercury levels during the night.

The mornings are likely to be greeted by moderate fog, adding a mystical touch to the winter ambiance. The silver lining, though, comes in the form of bright sunshine during the day, providing much-needed warmth and respite from the nippy conditions.

As of Saturday, the maximum temperature recorded was 24.1 degrees Celsius, slightly above normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 9.7 degrees Celsius, also above the usual range. Similar conditions are anticipated on Sunday and Monday, with a change expected from Tuesday onward.

In neighboring areas, similar weather patterns are expected to unfold. December, typically a prime winter month, started on a warmer note this year, with higher temperatures during the night for the initial days. However, a shift in wind patterns has now brought temperatures back to normal levels.

In recent articles, we covered the temperature plunge in Delhi, experiencing its coldest day yet at 4.9 degrees Celsius, four notches below normal. The city's air quality remained in the "very poor" range, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 323. The dip in mercury was attributed to clear skies, allowing radiating heat to escape early morning and at night.

Delhi witnessed a further drop in temperature to a season's low of 8.3 degrees Celsius, a degree below normal. This significant temperature dip marked the coldest morning since November 28, driven by clear skies and conducive conditions for heat loss.

Lucknow, not to be left out, observed its 'coldest' day this winter, with the minimum temperature dropping below 10 degrees Celsius. The state Met department reported that the maximum temperature recorded was 24.7 degrees Celsius, -0.6 degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature was 9.8 degrees Celsius, -0.4 units below normal. The cold spell is attributed to the northwesterly winds from the cold hilly regions, with these weather conditions expected to persist for the next five days.

Stay tuned for further updates as we navigate the winter season, bringing you the latest on temperature fluctuations, weather patterns, and how to stay warm in the chilly nights ahead.
